In Stores Today -- Bow Wow

It's hard to believe that Bow Wow is releasing his 7th major label CD and he's only 22! Whether TI has ghost-written for him or not, you can't refute Bow Wow's staying power...it can be attributed to his very early start (according to Wikipedia, he got his official start at the age of 7 after appearing Snoop Dogg's "Gin And Juice" video)...but the undeniable key to his success is the team he's surrounded by...while there have been reports of falling-outs w/ his mentor Jermaine Dupri, the 2 are on a solid path to make Shad Gregory Moss a living legend...maybe even surpass his older counterparts, in terms of album productivity and merchandising

While I'm still lost on the title of his new album, New Jack City II produces some predictable yet noteworthy collaborations. Bow Wow never misses an album w/out a JD-feature so "Roc The Mic" came as no surprise when it was pushed as a promotional single. However, Bow Wow is also looking and sounding beyond his years on "You Can Get It All" w/ Johnta Austin, produced by Grammy-award winning producer BMC (Bryan Michael Cox for you music novices). This particularly is a favorite of mine, as it incorporates a sample from the classic TLC hit "Baby, Baby, Baby". Judging by the lyrics and video, Bow Wow must've drawn heavily off TI's "Whatever You Like". In a strange way, it's a good thing though. He's finally tapping into his maturity and the video reflects where he is as a young man.

Speaking of TI, Bow Wow linked up w/ the King of the South on "Been Doin This"; letting anybody who challenges his standing in hip hop to check his resume (6 years later still on top/Makin these hits but it ain’t gon stop/Imma get this money til my casket drop). The other stand out record for me is "I Aint Playin", featuring R&B favorite Trey Songz...proclaiming himself as "Mr Do It For the Ladies", B Weezy makes it clear that he's a grown man now...the cougars out there can call him Shad Moss...while he's been romantically linked to the likes of Superhead, he puts a little bit too much information out on this...and the sexy vocals of Trey Songz is what saves the record

This is Bow Wow's 1st CD that's out-rightly explicit; so much so that it needed a sticker...however it's a sign of him being unrestricted and independent in the material he produces now...New Jack City II features production and appearances from Swizz Beatz, Nelly, T-Pain, and Row Browz

Cops are out of hand EVERYWHERE!

We often see headlining stories about police misconduct in the bigger metro cities like Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, even Miami...but this story comes out of Dallas and I can't help but to think, are cops just out of their damn minds everywhere!

Check out the unedited dash-cam footage here ---> http://www.wfaa.com/video/featured-index.html?nvid=345766&shu=1

I'm not gonna copy the story b/c you can just look it up online...but the short version is NFL running back Ryan Moats and his family were stopped right outside of a Plano, TX hospital after Moats ran a red light...mind you, he was en route w/ his family to be by the bedside of his dying mother-in-law...this cop, Robert Powell, detained them outside of the hospital in the parking lot...he proceeded to badger and threaten Moats...the sad thing is this officer took away a moment that that family can never get back (Moats' mother-in-law passed while the altercation was going on)

As of a press date today, the officer has offered a bogus apology (of course at the advisement of his lawyers) and has been placed on paid administrative leave...an investigation has ensuded...the Dallas PD has been overwhelmed with phone calls and emails from both the Dallas area and people outraged across the country...the family is seeking justice for the treatment...the term "racial profiling" has been thrown into the mix too

Now this is my personal opinion...w/in the 1st 3 minutes of the dash cam footage, Ryan Moats clearly states his understandable reason for running the light...altho he's not in the line of view of the dash cam until later, you can clearly him say that he waited and saw no traffic coming in any direction before he ran the red light...there is no threat or angst in his voice, despite the immense emotional pressure he's assumably under...police officers have discretion, that's 1 of the 1st things they learn in the academy...and seeing as the officer followed Moats to the hospital, he very well could've let him slide and go be by his wife and her family's side in their time of grief...but as usual, this is a classic example of an officer utilizing his range of power to humiliate and ostracize the very people he took an oath to protect and serve

The officer's language and demeanor is just disgusting...he was condescending, disrespectful, and then he blatantly threatened Moats (he says how he could cuff Moats and really screw him over)...keep in mind, all of this is happening, while the man's mother in law is dying...Moats was so much calmer than most of us would've been

To this, all I can say is thank God for dash-cams...b/c had this exchange not been caught on tape, it'd be the officer's word against Moats...and you know how that would've turned out...my prayers goes out to the Moats family and I hope they take whatever legal/civil action they can

Houston is Back! Slim Thug, Boss of All Bosses

Now I'll be the 1st to say, being a East Coast girl, I'm not a fan of the 3rd coast sound at all! However, I decided to give Slim Thug's 2nd CD Boss of All Bosses a fair shot. I wasn't disappointed, but I wasn't impressed either. It appears that the Texas region has a habit of launching their native sons into momentary and sporadic stardom (let's not forget about Mike Jones huge success with "Back Then" and Paul Wall's Billboard stint in 2005 with "The Peoples Champ" project)

Initially, I was surprised that this is only Slim Thug's sophomore project. However, upon listening to it 4 times, the mediocrity is in plain sight. He borrows the classic line from 1 of hip hop's greatest "Don't call it a comeback, I been here for years" on the record, "Show Me Love", which is somewhat ill-placed. 1 of the few redeeming lines Thugga spits comes from "I'm Back", outwardly admitting how the politics of his former label hindered record sales on his debut CD, Already Platinum (overzealous album title perhaps?). I can respect his candid take on the label situation, because most artists hide behind politics and pull the "no comment" card.

Teaming up with crossover favorites, Jim Jonsin and JR Rotem, "I Run" is a record you can take the club or the beach this spring. The production is geared to get your aura right, but lyrically shows how in tune Slim Thug is with his Houston connections (I'm still n tha hood, I can't leave the streets/It's n my blood I'm a thug till I be deceased). The letdown is with the prideful anthem and cameo-laced "Welcome to Houston" falls flat. It doesn't do Slim Thug or any of the artists featured on the record justice. (Chamillionaire,

All in all, this is a refreshing project right now. The last few quarters, hip hop artists are following trends and fads like the use of autotune and kick-drums. While those artists aren't hurting for sales, it's good to hear something that's unconventional and atypical in this otherwise static hip hop climate

In The Studio with Ginuwine!

Now under new management and record label, R&B legend Ginuwine is geared to release his 6th studio LP, A Man's Thoughts, June 2nd! His lead single "My Last Chance" is hitting the charts, so be sure to vote for the video, buy the single on iTunes and support!

The track with Brandy sounds great! If the leaked tracks that I've been receiving are indicative of Ginuwine's variety, he'll re-affirm his longevity and ability to grow with his audience (his last album only went gold)

A Man's Thoughts features production from industry go-to guy Bryan Michael Cox, The Underdogs, Polow the Don, and longtime collaborator Timbaland

FL School holds "Pull Up Your Pants"

Such a great idea! It's high time that we start instilling stronger, old-fashioned values in our children...the image of the black community isn't going to change, simply because our president is black...the perception of the upcoming generation needs to redefined from the inside out...meaning parents, turn off BET/MTV and communicate w/ your children...teach them how that presentation and appearance is everything (professionally and personally)...while hip hop artists and singers aren't supposed to be your child's role model, they obviously have a great influence...it's up to you as the parent to shape your child's reality and be their 1st experience as a role model

Keri causes a stir!

If The-Dream has the midas touch on writing #1 hits, Keri Hilson is his female counterpart. One may not know that Miss Hilson is no stranger to music charts. Her songwriting crew, The Clutch, has written blockbuster songs like "Take Me As I Am" (Mary J. Blige), "Ice Box" (Omarion), "Like A Boy" and the international hit "The Way I Are". But in 2006, the platform was set for Hilson to come into her own as a SINGER and songwriter. Under the tutelage of Timbaland and Danja, Hilson began an almost 2.5 year span of creating her debut album, In A Perfect World, which is in stores now! (word has it, she caused quite a ruckus at the Virgin store tonight...but that didn't stop her from showing love to fans before the cops asked them all to leave)

I started out making the comparison to The-Dream for a specific reason. While Keri doesn't have the strongest or most recognizable voice, In A Perfect World takes you on a very realistic feminine perspective of love; falling in and out. The lead single "Turnin Me On" leaves much to be desired (as most singles often do), but it carried with the help of Lil Wayne (and the countless remixes that followed). The collection of records are enjoyable, but disappointingly normal. Hilson's vocal delivery on such tracks as "Make Love" and "Slow Dance" (co-written by Justin Timberlake) is relatively intense though. She also shows her ability to keep up lyrically with music's leading men, Kanye West and Ne-Yo on her 3rd single "Knock You Down".

Although the project has its flaws, Keri Hilson proves that she's more than capable of stepping into the ring w/ female r&b favorites. She may not be superstar status yet. But she's on the minds of bloggers and other forms of media. I mean she did call out the reigning multi-media queen, Mrs. Shawn Carter (or Beyonce, whichever you prefer). While the controversy was a good segueway into her album release, Hilson need not rely on or succumb to throwing petty jabs. For example, the aforementioned record "Make Love" will blow many listeners away; it's not a record you'd attribute to Keri Hilson. But trust me, that song is the glue that holds the entire CD together. The production is sexy and it ventures into unknown vocal territory. Timbaland takes us to the club on the drum-driven "How Does It Feel".

Make no mistake, this is not an album that will receive tons of praise or awards. On the other hand I'm impressed and I give her props as credible urban/pop singer. Hopefully the weaknesses on this CD will be corrected on her 2nd effort. In a perfect world, Hilson will come back and establish her own sound that is uniquely Keri Hilson

Strongest Records

"Make Love"
"Knock You Down"
"Tell Him The Truth" (great production from Danja, powerfully written)

Weakest Records

"Alienated"
"Get Your Money Up"
"Turnin Me On" (as popular as this song was/is, I just don't think it's a strong joint for her)

Jadakiss and Styles P Rocked Austin!

In case you're completely oblivious to music news, this past weekend the South by Southwest entertainment conference in Austin, TX...it featured live performances and cyphers from such artists like Asher Roth, Bobby Ray (the artist formerly known as B.O.B), Wale, Playboy Tre, Solange Knowles, and more! Many people were Tweeting about the shows and performances...the consensus came out that if you love music (not just hip hop), this is an event you must attend once in your life!

I was able to find a truly amazing performance by Jadakiss...he brought it back w/ some old school favorites...I know ya'll remember when "Wild Out" was THE CLUB SONG! I had forgotten that "Get High" was a LOX song...this was classic!

I wanna be Ciara!

She may not have the strongest voice, but hands-down Ciara is the best dancer in the r&b genre...whether it's using a chair or a guy as a prop, Ciara does it effortlessly and so sexy...I love this video! Oh and Justin looks good too

Slain Teen Misidentified

It's a well-known fact that our justice system, from the high courts down to local court clerks, are overwhelmed and often fall short in what's expected of them...however, some things are just inexcusable...it's hard to say whether this situation was just shotty police work or result of the back up in the New York medical examiner's office...I'm inclined to believe the latter b/c how hard is it to identify a dead body vs someone still alive...if officers mistakenly identified the young girl, wouldn't they have flagged the identity? Seen a DMV history, credit card/bank account activity, something that would've let them know they had the wrong girl? Often times, there's gross misconducts of justice where it's very clear who passed the buck...on this 1, it's hard to call

******************************************************

NEW YORK (March 21) - A 16-year-old girl whose misidentified body languished in a morgue for a month, while her family searched for her, died from an asthma attack she suffered as she was restrained and raped, officials said Friday.
Tiana Rice was reported missing Dec. 30, when she didn't return to her Bronx home after going to Brooklyn to meet someone she had gotten to know online, police said.

Police responded that night to a call about an unconscious woman at an abandoned Brooklyn home, and paramedics pronounced the girl dead. It was Tiana, but she was mistakenly identified via the driver's license of a previous resident of the home, who is still alive.

The 911 call came from a pay phone not far from where Tiana's body was found, clad only in socks, police said. An anthropologist later realized Tiana's body didn't match the age of the person on the driver's license. The body was identified a month later, after the anthropologist pored over missing-person records. Meanwhile, Tiana's parents and other family members frantically searched for her. Her father identified her body Feb. 3.

Authorities initially believed she died from an asthma attack, police said.
On Friday, the news for the family got worse: The medical examiner's office ruled Tiana's death a homicide and said she died of cardiopulmonary arrest and acute bronchial asthma brought on by being restrained and sexually assaulted.

No arrests have been made.

Party w/ Diddy and QTip

I just broke 3 ribs and cracked my collarbone, so updates to the blog may be a lil slow in the next week, while I'm healing...but I had to snap out of my drugged-up state to check this out...very few of us are blessed w/ the pleasure to party w/ Diddy or attend en event he's hosting! Since it's a recession, Diddy brings the party to you!

In this ground-breaking marketing push, Diddy now has his own UStream channel...and he kicked it off tonight w/ taking us all to the club w/ him, Santos in NYC...altho the place is relatively small, it was wall to wall and w/ Q-Tip doing a live DJ set, it was certified crazy! Of course the Ciroc Boyz was in the building! The music was a lil iffy to me (I mean Al Green in the club? Seriously)...but from the looks of it, the people had a great time

Let's see who'll be the next celebrity to jump on the bandwagon and take their fans on a "Entourage" level nightclub experience...I say it all the time, whatever you think of Diddy as a person, you can't deny his intelligence when it comes to business...he sets the bar for other artists to step it up

What will Diddy do next? Follow Him on Twitter and check out his UStream channel

The top 10 indicators of BITCHA$$NE$$

On Shelves Today! Gorilla Zoe

Bad Boy South artist Gorilla Zoe released his sophomore project, Don't Feed Da Animals, today! While I'm not a fan of Zoe, I find myself listening to this CD a few times over today. Wale Announces His New Album Title!

I've been waiting to hear the official news about Wale's debut album for the past few months...this guy has been building up a buzz like no other artist out of the DMV, since Chuck Brown (if you don't know who that is, google him!)

According to his Twitter, Attention:Deficit will be dropping this summer!

Check out some direct commentary regarding what we can expect from Wale on his 1st official album

"my album is my heart, my album is my story..its about insecurities we all have ..its honest...my album is just my part in trying to restore a genre some say is fading..because so many people stopped payin attention...my album is about tryin to push the envelope on creativity ...my album isnt designed to go at any particular demographic...a heart knows no demographic..a message knows no demographic...it just speaks"

Very well put! Can't wait to hear the full project! Follow Wale on twitter http://twitter.com/waledc

Mixtape Must Have! Russian Rullet

I told ya'll March is music madness month! So I got you w/ a 1-2 combo on the mixtape game...Russian Rullet is a West Coast artist you definitely need to familiarize yourself w/...his street album, Tha Heist volume 1 is now available

Click his image to cop it

Mixtape Must Have! J-Shin

J Shin 1st surfaced as the only r&b vocalist on Slip n Slide Records...in 1999, he released his debut project featuring the heavily pushed single "One Night Stand" (w/ Latosha Scott of Xcape)...he released his 2nd project in 2006 w/ the widely received "Send Me An Email"...now he's back w/ a street album and gearing up to release his 1st independent project, under his own imprint, RichSoulKidd Entertainment

Ladies and Gents, re-introduce yourself to Miami-native, singer/songwriter/producer J Shin!

Download J Shin's The R&B General (w/ work from Cool and Dre, T Pain, Ray J, and more)

Your Woman Chose Me will be out this May! So keep it locked for that

This kid is ONLY 10!

So it's 3am and I just got in from a crazy party @ Eros (big ups to the Glenn Twins and Eva Pigford, I had a blast, sick and all lolol)...I logged into Twitter just to see what worthwhile tweets I missed throughout the day...and I come across this, courtesy of TJ Chapman (of TJsDJs)

Now there are so many things wrong w/ this video...I don't even know where to begin...the 1st is as a parent why do you have your child out in the street like that? I understand preaching the Word and teaching religion from an early age, but protesting at the age of 10? Religious people always say the God calls on children to spread his word and I'm willing to buy into that ideology...but this is just way too much

Secondly, a 10 year old should not even know what the word "whore" means...if you wanna teach your child that certain types of behavior are wrong, you can say it's unpleasing to God or it's not in agreement w/ the faith...but watching this boy spew such foul language, it blew me...it's disappointing actually...even though I could see the intent was in the right place, his ignorant parents are teaching him the wrong methods...and what's so sad is that he'll grow up to be 1 of the radicals that are out there delivering a good message but going about it completely wrong...putting his own life and the lives of others at risk...and people wonder how people grow up to be terrorists...this is how

Radio Killaaa

So it's the day after The-Dream's official album release party...it was crazy! Hiro Ballroom is 1 of the newest celebrity hot spots and last night was certainly no different...the VIP guest list included: Mary J. Blige and her husband, Kendu, Ludacris, Fabolous, entertainment lifestyle specialist Kenny Burns, Tricky Stewart, Donnie Klang, Mickey Factz, and much more...even Ryan Leslie stopped by after his stellar performance at SOB's in SoHo!

The honoree was of course fashionably late w/ rumored flame, Christina Milian...I'm not a hater, so I can say this proudly...Christina Milian is a BAD chick...blond hair, brown hair, no hair, doesn't matter...she's a very beautiful woman...her and The-Dream are a somewhat offbeat couple, but I have to say, they make a cute couple

While it's only March and still 1st quarter, I am comfortable in proclaiming Love vs Money is a leading contender for best R&B album of the 2009! The-Dream has already shown why he's the Radio Killa...after topping a hugely successful 2007 with Rihanna's "Umbrella" and Beyonce "Single Ladies" in 2008, The-Dream focused his innate songwriting ability on his own sophomore project...the lead single "Rockin That Thang" is something like a follow-up to "Shawty is a 10", but w/ a new found maturity...just as his industry colleague J. Holiday, The-Dream draws heavily off of 1 of R&B's greatest triple-threats R. Kelly...w/ such tracks like "Sweat It Out" and "Put It Down", he exudes that raw sexuality that we're used to hearing from Mr. Kelly...surprisingly The-Dream does it better...he holds nothing back delivering the lines "You want it from the front or the back, on your side just relax, and let me lay between your legs"...um, it's hot in here!

He teams up w/ the likes of Mariah Carey, Kanye West, and Lil Jon (who contributed the bonus track "Lemme See That Booty")...what makes this album next to genius is that it doesn't seem like The-Dream is trying too hard...I felt like LoveHate was a rushed effort and didn't showcase his complete talent...the best part of the project is the almost 15 minute mid-section which highlights the title track (both part 1 and 2), as well as "Fancy"...its production value is something we've never heard
before in the R&B genre...it follows the storyboard of him buying his girl everything and anything a woman could desire, thinking that could keep her...utilizing a driving electronic sound seamlessly throughout the CD, the heartfelt loss is captured in a manner that sets The-Dream at the top of his game

Check out the photo gallery from the release party on YouTube

Videos You'll Love

Finally Chrisette Michelle is back...w/ a special cameo from Drake

Somethin very different from The-Dream, but I like where it was going (he has every right to be confident, but let's hope he doesn't turn into the 'Ye of R&B)

I LOVE so many things about Jazmine Sullivan's video...I love that it was done in blk/white (gives it an artistic edge most videos lack)...I love that a story is infused w/ her live performance...how many women can relate to choosing the bad boy, when we know daggone well the good guy is the right choice? and her voice is so...poweful (that's an understatement, but I can't think of the right word)

T.I Bares All on 4th Vibe Cover

The great thing about networking is often times, you get to see and hear about different things before the rest of the world does...in some cases, as it's happening...media outlets are no different

Vibe Magazine's Twitter page released the April cover, featuring a naked T.I earlier this week...unfortunately, not naked in the sense most of us ladies would like to see lolol They chose not to photoshop this cover...while some may complain, I think it was a great choice...T.I has been on so many magazine covers this past year...For me, this is 1 stands out above the rest...It captures a certain authenticity and edginess that his other covers have lacked...so big ups to the photographer and to Vibe for taking the unconventional route on this 1

Educational Reform under Pres Obama

So far, Obama is coming through on what his platform proposed...his latest tackle is our dismal education system...I feel like our lackluster educational system, from pre-K through college, is heavily correlated w/ high incarceration rates, teen pregnancy, violence among teens, and many other social problems...in order to be tackle the other tough societal dilemmas, we have to start from the bottom and work our way up...underprivileged and underfunded schools need to be focused on and in some cases, structurally re-vamped...early education is imperative to a child's lifelong ability to learn...when a child is missing the fundamentals of education, he or she will continue to fall short throughout life...there's no reason why your child should know every song on the radio, but they can't spell their name or remember their address...educational achievement can also be a generational stifling, which segueways into teen pregnancy rates...I don't like to dissect politics and break things down in this, that, and the 3rd...b/c when you look at the bottom line, everything is always connected, rather it's direct or indirect

The only thing I don't agree w/ is rewarding teachers w/ higher pay...the phrase is "rewarding excellence" is very ambiguous...who will determine what teachers deserve the pay and what teachers don't? Will it be based on students' performance? Will it be based on experience and length in a particular district? I mean, isn't that the purpose of tenure; to ensure the most effective and most qualified teachers stay in the classroom? I agree that teachers are under-paid and their salary differential compared to other professionals is unacceptable...but I'd like to think of teachers a step away from parents; you're doing a thankless job and you go into education b/c you genuinely love it...not for the praise or tangible rewards

Obama: 'We've let our grades slip'
The president takes on unions, backs teacher merit pay in new plan
The Associated Press
updated 11:49 a.m. ET, Tues., March. 10, 2009

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama on Tuesday embraced a new approach to public education that adds up to merit pay for the better teachers and longer days and school years for students.

These proposals, which constitute the new president's vision of an education system that meets 21st century challenges, were sure to generate loud criticism, particularly from teachers' unions.

Educators oppose charter schools because they divert tax dollars away from traditional public schools. Merit-based systems for teachers have been anathema to teachers' unions, a powerful force in Obama's Democratic Party.

Obama acknowledged this in his talk to the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

"Too many supporters of my party have resisted the idea of rewarding excellence in teaching with extra pay, even though we know it can make a difference in the classroom," he said, delivering the first major education speech of his presidency. "Too many in the Republican Party have opposed new investments in early education, despite compelling evidence of its importance."

'An economic imperative'
But he argued that a far-reaching overhaul of the nation's education system is an economic imperative that can't wait, despite the urgency of the financial crisis and other pressing issues.

"Despite resources that are unmatched anywhere in the world, we have let our grades slip, our schools crumble, our teacher quality fall short, and other nations outpace us," Obama said. "The relative decline of American education is untenable for our economy, unsustainable for our democracy, and unacceptable for our children. We cannot afford to let it continue. What is at stake is nothing less than the American dream."

The ideas the president promoted were nearly all elements of his campaign platform last year. He only barely mentioned the reauthorization of the Bush-era No Child Left Behind Act, which introduced sweeping reforms that schools are struggling to meet without the funding to match. Obama said his administration would "later this year" ensure that schools get the funding they need and that the money is conditioned on results.

Among the principles Obama laid out were:
# Challenging states to adopt world-class standards rather than a specific standard. Obama's economic stimulus plan includes a $5 billion incentive fund to reward states for, among other things, boosting the quality of standards and state tests, and the president said the Education Department would create a fund to invest in innovation.
# Improved pre-kindergarten programs, including $5 billion in the stimulus plan to grow Head Start, expand child care access and do more for children with special needs. He also said he would offer 55,000 first-time parents regular visits from trained nurses and said that states that develop cutting-edge plans to raise the quality of early learning programs would get an Early Learning Challenge Grant, if Congress approves the new program.
# Reducing student dropout rates. To students, Obama said: "Don't even think about dropping out of school." But he said that reducing the dropout rates also requires turning around the worst schools, something he asked lawmakers, parents and teachers to make "our collective responsibility as Americans."
# Repeating his call for everyone to commit to at least one year or more of higher education or career training, with the goal of highest proportion of college graduates in the world by the year 2020.

On charter schools, he said the caps instituted by some states on how many are allowed aren't "good for our children, our economy, or our country."

Teacher policy
Obama also spoke at length about what he described his policy toward teachers, what he called an `unprecedented commitment to ensure that anyone entrusted with educating our children is doing the job as well as it can be done." In up to 150 more school districts, Obama said, teachers will get mentoring, more money for improved student achievement and new responsibilities.

Also, Obama said, "We need to make sure our students have the teacher they need to be successful. That means states and school districts taking steps to move bad teachers out of the classroom. Let me be clear: if a teacher is given a chance but still does not improve, there is no excuse for that person to continue teaching."

The president acknowledged that a rethinking of the traditional American school day may not be welcome — "not in my family, and probably not in yours" — but is critical.

"The challenges of a new century demand more time in the classroom," Obama said. "If they can do that in South Korea, we can do it right here in the United States of America."

After the speech, Obama stopped at a hotel to drop in on another meeting, an already scheduled and ongoing round-table discussion between Education Secretary Arne Duncan and the Council of Chief State School Officers, which involves the heads of education from every state and U.S. territory.

J. Holiday, Street Soul

Often times, artists experience a sophomore flop...which translates in laymen terms, their 2nd project doesn't quite come close to the success as its precedent...after spinning J. Holiday's Round 2 a few times, I feel like he narrowly will escape this trend

This soulful DC native came out of nowhere, bursting through the industry doors 2 years ago with his smash hit "Bed", under the tutelage of The-Dream...he followed it up with "Suffocate" and his freshman project, Back of My Lac, garnered him a Grammy nomination

As impressed as I was with Back of My Lac, Round 2 finds itself falling into a comfort zone. J. Holiday took the very safe approach and delivered songs with his smooth-as-honey vocals and intermediate production. Round 2 opens with lead single "It Is Yours", produced by the same duo who did Ciara's "Promise" and Christina Aguilera's "Dirrty"...sort of an odd connection, but it works

"Don't Go" is reminiscent of old school 1990s in terms of lyrical content and production...It has that tone of the vintage strong call and repeat format, a style set coupled with its intro and hook, it'll remind you of K-Ci and JoJo. "Run Into My Arms", while it's too sappy for my taste, the midtempo beat makes it very likeable...If you close your eyes, you can picture a young Ralph Tresvant or young Tevin Campbell..."Sing 2 U" is by far my favorite cut...out of the entire CD, I feel this 1 is as close as follow up to "Bed" as he could've delivered...his part paying tribute to great r&b vocalists is off the hook...it's very smooth and the bass maintains its sensual tone

"Wrong Lover" is the only collaboration on Round 2...Truthfully the album would've been so much more cohesive w/out it...Rick Ross wasn't the right rapper to pair up w/ and the production doesn't do J. Holiday's voice any justice...the remaining tracks leave much to be desired...to put it mildly, the rest of the CD sounds the same, w/ the exception of "Homeless"...I think the long-term favorite for J. Holiday fans will be "Forever Ain't Enough"...you can go ahead and add that to the index of classic, beautiful wedding songs...I haven't heard a beautifully-produced song like this in awhile...for me, it's 1 of the CD's saving graces...it will be 1 of those songs that would sick in a live set! I hope he adds it to his upcoming tour

Strongest Cuts:

It Is Yours
Run Into My Arms
Sing 2 U
Forever Ain't Enough

Weakest Cuts:

Wrong Lover
Fly
I Tried

**The rest I don't care either way, but they don't take enough away from the overall CD to sway my opinion

The G.O.A.T

Brooklyn's finest and every REAL rapper's favorite rapper

12 years ago, the world tragically lost a true pioneer in East Coast hip hop, Christopher B.I.G Wallace...Biggie was a leader is resurrecting and revamping the East Coast sound of hip hop...while he was big in stature, he was also big on talent and personality...I just recently saw the movie Notorious and I have my bones to pick w/ it...however, I felt like the movie really captured Biggie's exodus from the streets of NY to music royalty...it's amazing that his talent wasn't completely recognized until he was abruptly taken away...to this day, his murderer has never been caught...while people have their own conspiracy theories about Biggie's death, I believe that karma always comes full circle

I dedicated a segment to the memory of B.I.G and here's a pack of my favorite Biggie songs

Diddy Gets Real

Making the Band is 1 of my favorite "reality" shows on TV, period! And the last 2 episodes of this season have finally shone a realistic on the music business and the misconceptions people have about new artists

Day 26 are in a position to be the IT group in r&b music right now...there's no other all-male group that are as talented as them...PERIOD! But with that said, last week's episode we saw them hemmed up in the house, not doing anything...according to the episode, their management and the label are re-negotiating their contract...while they're in negotiations, they're not allowed to record or do any shows...so in simple terms, not only are they broke, but they're not allowed to make money independently...as sad as it was, I thought it was an episode that needed to be shown...b/c the general public seems to think oh they're on Bad Boy, they're performing in London, they just came off a crazy tour, they should be rolling in stacks...and we saw that that's not the case...Willie has a child and a wife, Brian has 2 children, they all have families that were looking to them to kinda help support whatever their life was before MTB...and the fact that they don't have that money they were expecting is disappointing...supposedly they weren't given advances and trust me, booking agents charge out the behind...all things considered, I'm w/ Robert...they're freakin Day 26, why can't they book shows? While nobody knows the ins and outs of their contract situation, one can only assume that the contracts are being negotiated b/c of the situation w/ Danity Kane

Donnie is taking the smart route and out there booking shows and appearances on his own...a few episodes ago, we saw that his mother sorta stepped in and took control of the situation...so that #1 Donnie can make $ and #2 He can prove to Diddy and the label that he's worth keeping on for a contract extension...he's making that happen w/ the proper management...something every new artist needs

The 2nd Day 26 album Forever In A Day drops April 14th...and from the cuts I've heard, it's definitely a step up from the debut project...so hopefully the situation gets better for them

States can't afford the death penalty

Some people feel like ancient code of Hamurrabi (eye for an eye) is effective and rational for the capital crimes like murder and rape...I, on the other hand, feel like giving a murderer or rapist a death sentence is giving him an out...granted the execution is usually held up by appeals and stay of executions...but they have a good idea of when/where/how they will die...they may not have it down to an exact minute, but they know death is coming...their victims and those victims' families didn't have that "luxury"...their victims weren't given a chance to say last goodbyes, get last rites, or even beg for their life...that right of life was taken away from them abruptly w/out true just cause...for some it may seem very cut and dry...you take a life, yours gets taken...I've always felt the guilt for the crime committed should be enough...that, in addition to the conditions and isolation one suffers in a 8x10 cell for 23hrs a day is more than enough punishment

People who support the death penalty usually use the argument that it's a deterrent...well to that I say, the increased # of executions and the amount of money states spend on capital cases says otherwise...check out this article and think about the money we invest in death row inmates...consider the astronomical costs 1 capital murder case entails...our education system is failing, our health care system is abismal, employment rates are reaching an all-time low...knowing these numbers, does it still makes sense to support the death penalty? Make your own judgements

We Can’t Afford the Death Penalty

New America Media, Commentary, Lance Lindsey, Posted: Mar 04, 2009 Review it on NewsTrust

From California to New York, dozens of newspapers are declaring that state governments can no longer afford the death penalty.

The Death Penalty Information Center in Washington, D.C., recently reported that the death penalty is too costly. Maryland spent $37 million per execution in the past 28 years. In Florida, home to the second largest death row in the country, the cost estimates are $24 million per execution. California’s cost is $250 million per execution, according to a Los Angeles Times article cited in the report. These states are among 36 states that have the death penalty and, like nearly every state, are going through a financial crisis.

The outrageous price that taxpayers bear in order to kill a handful of prisoners has been thrown into sharp relief.

Legislators in New Mexico, Kansas, Maryland, Nebraska, Montana, New Hampshire, and Colorado are now calling for a repeal of capital punishment, not only to help balance budgets but as a necessary first step in redirecting scarce resources toward genuine public safety measures such as investigating unsolved homicides, community policing, modernizing crime labs, expanding mental health services and other more effective crime prevention programs.

As Martin O’Malley, the governor of Maryland, told the New York Times after showing that capital cases in his state cost three times as much as non-capital ones, "We can't afford that when there are better and cheaper ways to reduce crime."

Recognizing the grandstanding of so-called “tough on crime” politicians as hollow and self-serving, abolitionists have always been the foremost public safety advocates. The simplistic championing of the death penalty, they say, is not really about effective crime prevention, but more about political ambitions.

Jim Oppedahl, a former state court administrator of Helena, Montana, said recently: “There is simply no place for such an enormously expensive government program that accomplishes nothing. And on that criterion alone, the death penalty ought to die.”

From a global perspective, opposing the death penalty’s utter futility as a criminal justice tool is simply a matter of common sense. The majority of nations in the world have abolished the death penalty in law or practice, and no Western democracy except the United States still kills its prisoners.

Here at home, more than 80 percent of all executions take place in the South. Given the fact that the latest FBI Uniform Crime report shows the highest murder rate in the United States to also be in the South, the argument for deterrence as a justification for the death penalty goes begging.

“What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility,” President Obama challenged us. And with that we are called upon to replace the politics of cynicism and fearmongering with courageous leadership and a politics of conscience. “We reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals,” said President Obama. “Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience's sake.”

With these words resonating within us, we insist that those very ideals must apply to our criminal justice system as well.

It is utterly irresponsible to invest hundreds of millions of dollars to expand death rows when our schools, our health care, our environment, and everything we value in our communities face a slow painful demise. We must reject as false the choice between public safety and human rights. And we must not give up the ideal that justice without violence and revenge can be achieved in our lifetime.

Abuse against women has to STOP!

It amazes me at how many bloggers were all over the Chris Brown/Rihanna situation, but they're sorta quick to post this...violence against a woman is unacceptable, rather she's rich or another young lady on the street...and what these officers did was BULLSH!T! It's disgusting and it's amazing that #1 these officers would be so aggressive w/ a woman and #2 w/ a child...b/c the young lady is a minor...please tell me, how does a shoe being kicked at you render a threat?

By KOMO Staff & News Services
SEATTLE -- A teenage girl who was kicked, hit and slammed to the floor of a jail cell by a King County sheriff's deputy says she screamed that she was not resisting but couldn't get him to stop.

Malika Calhoun, 16, said Monday on CBS' "The Early Show" the attack that began after she kicked off a shoe in the direction of the deputy was "horrible."

"I was yelling. I was like, `This isn't - I'm not resisting, I'm not resisting,' and he said, `Whether you're resisting or not, that was assault,"' Calhoun said. "Then he just kept doing it and kept going and going."

The attack was recorded by a surveillance camera in November and was released by prosecutors last week in the case against Deputy Paul Schene, who is accused of using excessive force. Schene, 31, pleaded innocent Thursday to fourth-degree assault.

According to Superior Court documents, Calhoun, 15 at the time, and a second girl were taken into custody in an auto theft investigation. Video images show that after Calhoun entered a cell at suburban SeaTac City Hall, she kicked off one of her shoes toward the deputy.

Calhoun denied that the shoe hit Schene.

Even so, she said he told her that kicking the shoe at an officer constituted assault and burst into the cell. Calhoun said she kicked the shoe at Schene because she was upset. Court documents say the shoe struck Schene below the knee. (Watch the video clip.)

Before the attack, Calhoun said, she and Schene had been arguing all night. She accused him of being rude.

The video "was very disturbing," her father Curtiss said in the CBS interview.

"I didn't know it was this severe of an assault," he said. "As far as what happens to him, I wouldn't like to see him work as a police officer. I don't think that's the job for him, based on the way he reacted."

The video showed a deputy kicking the girl, pushing her strongly back against the wall, grabbing her hair and slamming her to the floor.

A second deputy was then shown entering the holding cell as the first deputy held the girl face down to the floor. The first deputy appeared to hit the girl with his hands. She was then lifted up and led out of the cell while the first deputy held her hair.

"It was horrible, like my head hit the wall when he first came in and kicked me," Calhoun said.

According to court documents, Calhoun complained of breathing problems after the episode and medics were called to check her. A short time later, she was taken to a youth detention center and booked for investigation of auto theft and third-degree assault, the latter accusation concerning the confrontation with the deputy. Calhoun has pleaded innocent to taking a motor vehicle without permission. She was never formally charged with assault.

Schene told investigators through an e-mail conversation with his lawyer that once the girl kicked her shoe at him, he entered the cell to "prevent another assault," according to court documents. Schene also said the girl refused to comply with instructions in the holding area.

Prosecutors said Schene did not explain why he apparently struck the girl after he had her in a holding position on the floor.

BET continues to slip

So last night, I stomached the 1st 15 minutes of the premiere of BET's newest reality show Harlem Heights, which is supposedly to be a chronicle of the new wave of yuppies in Harlem

Now right off the bat, you can tell how semi-scripted the show is...and why is voice-over necessary in reality TV anyway? It was fine to start the season off with the inauguration of Pres. Obama...HOWEVER, that's been almost 2 months ago...I think had the show started off somewhere else, it may have been able to hold my attention...they could've saved that episode for like the reunion show or web-only exclusive...the purpose of reality TV is timely and relevant

The other part that I know will keep me from watching the show regularly is there's so many "characters" to keep up w/...the show follows the lives of 12 people who are doing their own things and following respective paths...and to me, I think that's far too much confusion

Overall, this is 1 of the BET shows that you'd probably want on a Saturday or Sunday when nothing else is on. Or wait until the reunion show and watch the clips

Review of TP Madea Goes to Jail

First and foremost, I am a consistent supporter of the Tyler Perry company. I have always enjoyed his plays. Every speaking engagement or interview he’s ever done, he’s so humble and surprisingly self-aware. However, I have to say, I’m tired of seeing Madea!

Tyler Perry has an ingenious skill of intertwining religion/spirituality with good-natured humor. He also has an amazing eye for talent. He always puts together great ensemble casts for his films, same with the plays. With MGTJ, he chose Derek Luke and Keshia Knight Pulliam as the central characters. Now we just saw Derek Luke a month ago as Puffy in Notorious. But we also know him for such serious roles in Lions for Lambs, Friday Night Lights, and of course his 1st major casted role, Antwone Fisher. Derek Luke has the innate ability to tap into your emotional realm and be vulnerable on screen, while maintaining that rough exterior. I’m not gonna lie, I almost cried in the scene where he’s talking about why Candace (Pulliam’s character) is so important to him. Without spoiling it for those who haven’t seen it, the deeply rooted guilt comes pouring out and it’s 1 of his better performances to date.

Keshia Knight-Pulliam has always been saying she wants people to stop seeing her as “Rudy from the Cosby Show”. With the role of a young lady who lost her way in MGTJ, I think she’s relatively close to differentiating little Rudy to fully-grown Keshia. I was a bit skeptical at 1st, b/c she’s not the greatest actress to begin w/…but after seeing the movie, I can admit, I do see her in a different light. Her role as a prostitute-trying-to-go straight is very believable on some levels. I saw her as a relevant actress, tuning into the character. Rather than it feeling forced

My only true problem with this film, as w/ the other Madea movies, is Madea…as crazy as it sounds, the character has just ran its course..the plot itself is very interesting and driven by relatable characters…but Madea is just randomly thrown in and it takes away from the film. The other side is, in the commercial trailers, mostly all of Madea’s scenes are shown…so when you see the actual movie, you already know what you’re about to see before the segueway is set.

That’s the only reason I’m giving the movie 3 out of 4 stars. This was his best opening weekend to date and it’s been reported he’s doing Why Did I Get Married 2!
